Attorney General Ford Announces State Legislator Endorsements

Today, President Trump <a href="https://x.com/yashar/status/2008959425067827230?s=46">announced</a> that he will call on Congress to ban large institutional investors from buying single-family homes – putting him directly at odds with Joe Lombardo who vetoed <a href="https://gov.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/gov2022nvgov/content/Newsroom/vetos/2023-06-16_Veto_SB395.pdf">a bill</a> that would have limited the ability of Wall Street corporate landlords to buy up housing stock in Nevada and drive up costs. Lombardo <a href="https://nevadacurrent.com/2025/05/28/at-lombardos-request-hansen-reluctantly-blocks-bill-to-rein-in-runaway-corporate-home-ownership/">blocked</a> a similar bill during the 2025 legislative session, then refused to include it in his special session proclamation.&nbsp;Attorney General Aaron Ford has made it clear <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/politics-and-government/nevada/ag-ford-launches-bid-for-nevada-governor-3404102/">since day one</a> that as governor, he will sign legislation to limit corporate homeownership within the first 30 of the 2027 legislative session. The second largest homeowner, another Wall Street firm, is based out of Dallas and owns <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/business/housing/this-company-is-likely-the-second-largest-homeowner-in-the-las-vegas-valley-3427264/">another 3,400 homes</a>.&nbsp;“We’ll need to see what this bill looks like, but I’ve been clear: when I’m Governor, we’re going to limit Wall Street firms from coming into Nevada, buying up our homes, and pricing hardworking families out of their neighborhoods,” said Attorney General Aaron Ford. “Here in Nevada, Governor Lombardo has been our biggest roadblock to affordable housing. He vetoed and blocked similar plans to stop Wall Street firms from controlling our housing stock before refusing to include similar legislation in his special session proclamation. After Lombardo Vetoed Legislation to Limit Corporate Homeownership, Trump Sides with Ford on the Issue

<h4>Nevada families are being priced out of their own neighborhoods. </h4>Corporate landlords are jacking up rents. Wall Street firms are buying up homes and leaving them vacant. Now, because of his dereliction of duty, Nevada families are suffering and Wall Street hedge funds are the largest landlords in Clark County, having amassed thousands and thousands of homes. Whether its mutli-billion dollar Wall Street firms buying up all the houses or a massive property management companies facilitating collusion to illegally inflate rents, the story is always the same: powerful special interests rigging the system to pad their profits at the expense of working families. That’s why I’m proud to see Democrats and Republicans in the legislature coming together to pass this legislation in a bipartisan way that will uplift working families trying to buy their first home. An open question remains as to whether Governor Lombardo will muster the comparable courage and finally do something to address this specific issue. Because let’s be clear, we wouldn’t be here but for the governor's initial veto and subsequent successful killing of the bill. And it now appears he wanted to water down the original bill even further and put the limit at 2,000. The bill settles at 1,000. It’s better than nothing. But it’s clear that it’s still corporations over people for Governor Lombardo. I hope that Governor Lombardo reverses his opposition and finally signs this legislation. So do Nevadans being priced out of homes and, indeed, entire neighborhoods.###

Are you seeing the results you want to see?FORD: Yes, absolutely. First, I’ll say that I acknowledged, right after Mr. Trump was elected, that he was our president, soon-to-be. I’m not an election denier. He won. What I’ve said is that he gets to implement his plans, his policies, his platform, his promises, but it must be so lawfully. And when he does not act lawfully, and if he negatively affects Nevadans, I’m going to see him in court. Whether it’s from freeing up important funds that were flowing to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, or whether it was freeing up funds that related to medical research, whether it was ensuring that he couldn’t engage in certain activities that were unlawful at the outset and negatively harm Nevadans, I’m quite pleased with the work we put in and the results we received.Q: What would you like to do to address the housing crisis in Nevada, if elected?FORD: The price to buy a home is at record highs, nearly half a million dollars in Clark County. The price to buy a home in Reno is more than $600,000. In 2023, (Lombardo) vetoed a bill to limit corporations from buying up homes and pricing hardworking families out of the neighborhoods.I would sign a bill that limits the amount of homes that out-of-state corporations and hedge funds can buy and pricing us out of our neighborhoods.I’ve demonstrated my ability to work with Democrats and Republicans alike to get affordable housing projects for veterans, for example, when I was senate majority leader. As attorney general, I prioritize the pocketbooks of hard work in Nevadans by going after corporate landlords who’ve been jacking up costs and pricing out working families.Q: What are your thoughts on the national conversation about affordability in the Las Vegas tourism market? What can or should be done at the state level to address that side of the economy?FORD: It goes back to Lombardo being afraid to stand up to Trump and not standing up to Trump and instead putting Trump’s interests ahead of Nevadans, whereas I’ve sued Trump for his tariffs, for example, that have led to a dramatic decrease in tourism and visitation in our state. We prevailed at the (U.S. Court of International Trade), and we are now going to the court of appeals to work through this.We have the highest unemployment rate in the nation for the first half of 2025. Last year we lagged behind the rest of the country in job growth. This tour also served as a canned food drive. The attendees, who filled the room, listened to the attorney general reiterate his core agenda: making Nevada more affordable for working families. One of Ford’s missions was to have a “listening tour” to hear what concerns Nevadans had about their economic situation. </li><li>Ford began his tour on Monday in Northern Nevada. It spanned 11 counties and focused heavily on what Ford calls the “affordability crisis” facing Nevadans. “And everywhere I go, the message is loud and clear: Nevada’s working families are struggling to keep up. That’s why we launched this tour, and that’s why we’re fighting back.” </li><li>Some of the impacts of the economy facing Nevadans are indeed critical. “In some areas, people are selling blood to pay their rent,” Ford stated. With healthcare costs rising, he said the government must protect SNAP benefits and Medicaid. He referred to his personal history as a single father, relying on the government, which helped him raise his family and continue his education. </li><li>“The stakes in the upcoming election have never been higher. We need to make Nevada affordable.” With that statement, he opened the discussion: “What is breaking your budget?” he asked those in the room. </li><li>Rising costs of pet care, along with cat litter and vaccinations, car insurance and healthcare costs were some of the issues discussed. Many seniors in Mesquite are suffering. Food banks are in crisis mode as operation costs keep increasing. There are continuous fundraisers, with programs needing money. </li><li>The housing crisis was also one of Ford’s priorities. He addressed the impact of housing speculation and how his office is working to protect consumers from predatory practices. “There are many seniors who are helping to support their adult children who are unable to make ends meet.” </li><li>Ford concluded his speech by stating that he makes decisions from the heart to help the people. “I am a husband, a father and then an attorney general.”</li></ul> ###
